ExperienceDuring the past six years of my life, I have been focusing on my development as an educator. While completing my undergraduate degrees, I also volunteered at various schools and in non-profit organizations to assist students in tutoring situations and after-school study programs. I also have assisted in various college classrooms with students who were blind, had hearing impairments or who struggled with ADD/ADHD.
Looking back, I earned A's in two English AP courses in high school and also received credit for those two courses at my chosen university the following year. In addition, I earned above-average scores on the SAT, ACT, GRE, and Praxis I and II. While I did not have a tutor during my preparation for these various tests, I created my own study tools that I feel assisted in my success; I have since re-purposed these and use them with my students (whether in a tutoring or classroom environment).
Teaching is my greatest passion. Since I was young, I created games and resources that made learning more fun for myself and my friends, and I also tutored many of my friends in middle school and high school during study periods and after school. Those early aspirations developed into a teaching license, volunteer situations and tutoring. Whenever I can, I attend conferences or programs that may further improve my teaching ability and list of resources, and I use those experiences and resources to improve my teaching skills and classroom, whether it is in a school building or at home.
And finally, as a side note, you may notice when looking at my tutoring subject preferences that there is a wide range, and there is a reason for that. Most---but only most---of my educational background is in English, ESL, and Creative Writing, so there is a large concentration of those subjects. But I also have over six years of editing and writing experience for professional and technical clients, and I have tutored countless students and clients in these areas. Finally, I have listed several arts areas, because I have also studied these extensively on my own time, and I have tutored in several of these in professional settings with students with disabilities.
Thank you so very much for your consideration!
HobbiesAs a student, my greatest interests related to English--reading the classics and contemporary work, writing poetry and short stories, and maintaining a blog with reading reviews and my own writing (primarily poems). I also found myself reading as many books and articles about History and Psychology as I can, and I also frequently play the piano, pursue new healthy recipes, and take nature walks. Now, as a new mother, I find my time largely filled with interactive, educational, and meaning-making experiences: games, toys, films, time with animals and time outside.
